Could you be wrongly diagnosed with Type 2 Diabetes when in fact you are Type 1?

Say that you felt sick for many years but had no way to get medical care and when you finally went to the dr you were diagnosed with diabetes. Do they automatically assume that you are Type 2 since you are older? How can they differentiate the two types?

a form of adult onset diabetes, often called type 1.5 diabetes, which is entirely insulin dependent, is often misdiagnosed as type 2 diabetes.

If you think you may not be a type 2, ask for antibody tests for type 1, as well as a c-peptide, the results are definitively diagnostic of one or the other.

i would say yes, there are possiblities that you are wrongly diagnosed. but that will be very rare.

usually, doctors will assume you have diabetes type 2 if you are 40y.o and above. they will run blood tests to check to be more precise. but usually type 2 diabetic are older, overweight people. type 2 is sually caused by unhealthy diet that contain loads of fats and suagr.

for diabetic type 1, they are usually babies, teenagers, young adults. they are not overweight but type 1 caused is still unknown, but it is said that the environment will trigger your body and caused u to have diabetes type 1.

however, my doctor had told me before, there was once a 45y.o. lady, she had diabetes symptoms, and doctors straight assume she had diabetes type 2. but, the medications she took had no effect on her, then after running several blood tests and they confirmed she is actually type 1 diabetic.

Yes, in older people its called latent onset diabetes – LADA – and can be diagnosed with a GAD antibody test BUT its unlikely to happen over many years – more like months or weeks. A telltale sign is that the conventional diet-exercise-medicine prescribed for t2 wont control the blood sugars at all and they progress to insulin much quicker then excepted.
