so your body seeks to convert glucose to glycogen and glycogen to glucose based on hormonal signals that are secreted in response to an event. ie if you ate tons of sugary food, your body will secrete a hormone called insulin from the beta cells of the pancreas, so that glucose in the blood will be able to be stored as glycogen in the muscle cells. conversely, if you have been starving all day and did not eat for 8 hrs, then your body will secrete glucagon from the alpha cells of the pancreas, signaling that glucose is gone…so glycogen is broken down in the muscle cells and travels in the blood to the brain where it is needed.
