A friend of mine has just been diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes, non insulin dependent. She has asked her GP to refer her to a dietician for some advice on what to eat and what to avoid, as she has overcome an eating disorder and is very conscientious about following advice now, but his response was “You don’t need advice, thousands of people have this condition, just deal with it”. She lives in a small village and there are no other GPs in the practice. I’m worried about her as she is taking his refusal rather hard – I’m wondering if anyone has any practical advice on actually living with the condition (rather than advice about dealing with the GP, which, though useful, would probably not get through to her at this stage) Many thanks in advance for any serious response.
One thing I missed out – we’re in the UK – I don’t know if this makes a difference to the level of service which can be expected as, of course, we’re not paying for treatment as its on the NHS…..

I am diagnosed “borderline diabetic” by my doctor. ….am probably even more across the “border” now since I have gained additional weight since diagnosed with borderline diabetes a while ago….and high blood pressure as well..due to being probably 95 lbs. overweight.
I feel weak when I try to diet…low fat…low carbs normal protein……grumpy…and hateful.
When I try to go on Atkins…that was HORRIBLE for causing water retention…more than my usual…from all the sodium involved in those protein overloads…….and bad for high blood pressure.It is imperative that I get on a eating style that will help me lose gradually, healthily, and PERMANENTLY……But, what is a good diet plan for my “almost” -(if not “for sure”) diabetes? I’m miserable…No energy….hurting legs and feet…I’m a hairstylist of 33 years old that stands on my feet all day…they swell due to that, being overweight, and hurt from the water in my ankles….much pain…..I feel 80 years old…..HELP…????
