Some questions about Gestational Diabetes.?
I’m 26 weeks tomorrow. Yesterday I found out that I failed my one-hour glucose test and am scheduled for a three-hour test next week. I’m a little worried and am already trying to make changes to my diet that I know will help if I am indeed diabetic. There are some things I’d like to know in advance, however, from your experiences.
1. Will I need to start seeing a high-risk doctor? Will this be at the recommendation of my OB?
2. Is there still a chance that I will pass the second test, even though I failed the first?
3. I know that having GD increases your risk for having a bigger baby and consequently having trouble during delivery. How common are other complications related to GD, especially those that would affect the baby?
Thanks for all answers.
Thanks so far…and I am worried because I do have a family history of type 2 diabetes (both my mom and dad have it). I know that may or may not affect my risk for gestational diabetes, but I’m just prone to worrying I guess. Thanks for everyone’s reassurance.
gestational diabetes and feeling sad?
i have gestational diabetes and managing it with diet plan and exercise. my blood sugar is in target range of what my dietitian advised me. but sometimes i crave sweets like cookies and cake. when i ask my boyfriend for it he puts me down and treats me like it’s my fault i have gestational diabetes. i feel like im in punishment and appreciated. im trying my best to manage my levels. when he says mean things it makes me cry because i feel like im doing everything alone. im overwhelmed with the strict diet plan and the small portion sizes i have to deal with, i feel sad most days. how do i let him know hes hurting me.
Question about gestational diabetes and delivery?
I was just wondering of anyone on here has gone into labor naturally (without being induced) after having gestational diabetes? Or do they almost always induce you? And at how many weeks usually do they do the induction?
Gestational Diabetes Test…a few questions?
Tomorrow I go in for the infamous gestational diabetes test at 9:00 in the morning. Jealous yet?
I know that you drink the especially “tasty” liquid in under 10 minutes (as ordered by the doctor) and have your blood drawn within the hour.
Do you think it would be fine if I ate breakfast? Skip it? What? I’m not really a morning person, so getting up before 8:00 may be a little difficult.
Yes, I know that I will not be drinking or eating anything between the times of 8:00 and 9:00. No, this is not my first time. This IS my first time to have this done at 9:00 AM though! The last time I had this done it was 5:00 PM!!
Any advice?
No, I’m not worried. If I have it, I have it; it’s not a big deal. I’m just interested to know if I should or should not eat breakfast. I have a call into my doctor, but I haven’t had a response yet. From what the nurses told me, they had 3 mothers go into labor, two with triplets and one with twins. I’m glad I’m not in labor there today!
I understand the 3 hour test, but whomever thought it would be a grand idea to tell a hormonal and pregnant woman to fast really HAD to consider that there would be crankiness?
And yes–I want to pass this 1 hour test as opposed to that stinking 3 hour test!
This is the time when I realize that having a newborn is fun but having to deal with the first and last trimester are the pits!
Questions on Gestational Diabetes?
I am 32 weeks and found out I had GD at 29 weeks. I’ve been controlling it through diet and exercise so far. I am scheduled for an Ultrasound on Friday to check the baby’s size, although I see I shouldn’t get to concerned with what that says since it looks like the accuracy isn’t very good this far along.
I check my levels 4 times a day.
My fasting (which is supposed to be between 70-90) is pretty consistently 100-117 (average so far is 105 even though I’ve had a few in the low 90’s, but never below 90).
My after breakfast (which is supposed to be between 70-120) is almost always between 100-120 (average so far is 107).
My after lunch (should be between 70-120) is usually OK and has been better lately. It’s average so far is 122.
My after dinner (should be between 70-120) is usually OK too and has also been better lately. I’m averaging 119 for it.
I’ve never had a fasting above 117 or a 2 hour after meals over 147.
How does this compare to your levels? I’m sticking to the diet exactly and am exercising as much as possible.
Also, my doctor has talked about maybe starting me on oral meds (before going to insulin) if my fasting numbers don’t get more control. If you were put on medication, at what point and did it help?
I’m also interested in when you delivered and how much your baby weighed? Were you induced or when went into labor on your own? How many weeks were you then? Did you have the baby vaginally or by c-section? How much did your baby weigh and did that vary from the ultrasound estimate if one was done? Did the baby have low blood sugar or have to go into NICU after birth?
Thanks for sharing your experience. You see so many questions here from pregnant mothers w/ GD, but not so many that check in after the birth to tell how everything went.
Gestational diabetes? Long with a lot of questions!!?
I failed my 1 hour test at 28 weeks. I’m 30 weeks now and just took my 3 hour test today. I had a bad reaction to the orange sugary drink that you have to drink. I almost fainted, got hot and just felt so sleepy…..the nurses gave me cold clothes, made me lay down and someone had to stay with me the whole time.Stupid question but does this mean that i have gestational diabetes? or did i just have a weird reaction to it? I’m scared that i have gestational diabetes.A lady in the waiting room told me that i probably have gestational diabetes because of the reaction that i had to the drink(she was NOT a nurse.) Did anybody have the same reaction and have gestational diabetes? Thanks!
Many questions about gestational diabetes.?
Can a woman get gestational diabetes early on in pregnancy? I am 17 weeks pregnant and already diagnosed with gestational diabetes. I found out really early at like 7 or 8 weeks. my numbers aren’t really high just slightly above the normal but they think I may have had diabetes before hand which I think is odd because I never had a problem before with blood sugar levels. I had a 3 hour glucose tolerance test done when I was about 11 weeks along and only one number was out of wack which was an hour after they made me take the glucola drink. This is such a hard thing for me to deal with, I work as a waitress full time and don’t always get a chance to eat my meals and snacks when needed. I have a docs note about needing a break during my shift but yesterday my jerk of a boss said no even though I had a note and my doc said i have to eat around the same time each day. any advice about all of this would be wonderful my main concern is can a woman get gestational diabetes early on? Thanks!
I’m loving the helpful answers so far. I am doing my best to watch my carbs but being a carb lover it’s so difficult but I’m managing. I’m still eating my favorite foods but watching how much of it I put into my mouth. It sucks that what I can eat lots of I don’t really eat alot of…I don’t eat red meats only chicken and eggs make me sick, the only veggies I love are corn, carrots and potatoes. I think I’d win the award for pickiest eater alive. Been this way since I was a toddler. I don’t know if it’s a texture problem or my tastebuds are odd but it took me forever to chew a piece of pork or beef when my mom cooked it for me as a kid. any diet tips also?
Thanks shootingstar, hearing that I’m not the only one diagnosed early is such a wonderful relief! I told my general manager about the whole ordeal and he looked pretty upset and told me that I have a doc. note and there was no reason to tell me no and I believe one of my fellow servers yelled at my non caring boss. Thank god he’s on vacation for the next week!
Gestational diabetes – a few questions here?
I was diagnosed yesterday with borderline gestational diabetes. Also, I have very low iron so am on iron therapy.
I am 31 weeks pregnant.
I am now going to be VERY careful with what I eat (sugar wise) but I was wondering what else I could do to make my levels more acceptable? I walk as much as I can but that is the only form of exercise I get (It is winter here in New Zealand)
There is no history of any type of diabetes in our family.
Is gest. diabetes common?
My midwife suggested I consume less chocolate (SOOO GUILTY!!! – I have been having chocolate cravings for a few months now.)
I am aware of the risks accociated with this disease e.g large baby, risk of c-section etc.
My midwife also said baby is not in the optimal birthing position and she gave me a list of “gravity induced” excersises to do. Do I need to worry 9 weeks (hopefully) out from birth about his position? He is already engaging.
My midwife explained the possibility of longer birth and back labour.
First baby
If you get gestational diabetes do you have to take insulin or can it be monitored with pills and diet?
Are women always required to take insulin for gestational diabetes?
Gestational diabetes “diet”?
While pregnant with my daughter I had gestational diabetes. I was on a meal plan where I was only allowed a specific carb count per meal/snack. I got rid of the info after giving birth but now would like to do that “diet” again. I know that my breakfast carb max was 30 grams. Anyone with gestational diabetes out there know the rest? I am thinking AM snack was 15 and PM snack was 20, everything else I don’t remember.
