Living with Diabetes 01
www.facebook.com In November of 2011, I was diagnosed with Type 2 Diabetes. This progressive disease exists on both sides of my family. So, I was expecting to develop this condition. What surprised me was I wasn’t expecting the onset for another 10-15 years. I plan to make a few more videos on this subject, and I’ll discuss how I’m coping with my condition.

Do you have any advice on living with Type 2 diabetes?
A friend of mine has just been diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes, non insulin dependent. She has asked her GP to refer her to a dietician for some advice on what to eat and what to avoid, as she has overcome an eating disorder and is very conscientious about following advice now, but his response was “You don’t need advice, thousands of people have this condition, just deal with it”. She lives in a small village and there are no other GPs in the practice. I’m worried about her as she is taking his refusal rather hard – I’m wondering if anyone has any practical advice on actually living with the condition (rather than advice about dealing with the GP, which, though useful, would probably not get through to her at this stage) Many thanks in advance for any serious response.
One thing I missed out – we’re in the UK – I don’t know if this makes a difference to the level of service which can be expected as, of course, we’re not paying for treatment as its on the NHS…..

Living with diabetes
According to a recent study by Dr. Mary Steinhardt, professor in the Department of Kinesiology and Health Education, type 2 diabetes is becoming the most prevalent health problem in the US, affecting more than 20.8 million people at an estimated cost of $132 billion annually. In her study titled “A Resilience Intervention in African American Adults with Type 2 Diabetes: A Pilot Study of Efficacy,” Steinhardt worked with members of the Diabetes Coaching Program. The program is devoted to resilience education, diabetes self-management and biweekly support group meetings. She found that minority groups are affected at higher rates, with African Americans 1.8 times as likely to have diabetes as non-Hispanic whites.
