Diabetes + Pregnancy – I have a few questions?

For starters, my dad is diabetic. Ever since I was a kid, my biggest fear is getting diabetes. This is my second pregnancy. I was tested for gestational diabetes in my first, it was fine, nothing abnormal or anything. Ever since my first pregnancy, my feet have been VERY swollen and red. They burn sometimes as well. My toe nails are VERY, VERY brittle… and what prompted me to ask this question, is that as I was trimming my toenails… I ripped my second to last toenail completely off. There’s like… this layer underneath of it, like the second layer… and a blood red line that runs through it. It has me really freaking out. I was discussing my feet with my dad last night, and he said burning feet and brittle toenails are a sign of diabetes. Since this isn’t something that occured over night, and something that I’ve had since the middle of my first pregnancy, what are the chances that I’m diabetic? Could it just be gestational diabetes? Before I got pregnant with my second, I just assumed I had a LOT of fluid in my feet. That’s how swollen they are, almost like balloons. Any help or advice would be greatly apprecaited, as I’m sort of freaking out a little.
I’m 15 weeks, and I have yet to get a new gestational diabetes test. I’ll ask about it at my next visit and hopefully get some answers. There’s really no tenderness at all, or warmth… it’s just sort of raw and hurting, where there’s basically no toenail except for the very, very bottom of the nail.

My husband is leery of attempting a pregnancy because I have type 2 diabetes. I have read about it, and while it is considered high risk, the success rates appear very positive.

Your ideas please.
