Diabetes meter (20 questions)?

My doctor told me to go and buy a meter to check my sugar levels because they were high when I went in. What brand is the best? Please, I’m not rich, and I can’t exactly afford some $50 meter. Are the meters quick or do I have to set them up for like an hour? Oh, and do they come with that thing you poke your finger with?
Yeah and I’m only 17 and I was just thinking about going like to Walgreens or Wal-Mart. But my doctor didn’t write me a prescription, either.

Diabetes + Pregnancy – I have a few questions?

For starters, my dad is diabetic. Ever since I was a kid, my biggest fear is getting diabetes. This is my second pregnancy. I was tested for gestational diabetes in my first, it was fine, nothing abnormal or anything. Ever since my first pregnancy, my feet have been VERY swollen and red. They burn sometimes as well. My toe nails are VERY, VERY brittle… and what prompted me to ask this question, is that as I was trimming my toenails… I ripped my second to last toenail completely off. There’s like… this layer underneath of it, like the second layer… and a blood red line that runs through it. It has me really freaking out. I was discussing my feet with my dad last night, and he said burning feet and brittle toenails are a sign of diabetes. Since this isn’t something that occured over night, and something that I’ve had since the middle of my first pregnancy, what are the chances that I’m diabetic? Could it just be gestational diabetes? Before I got pregnant with my second, I just assumed I had a LOT of fluid in my feet. That’s how swollen they are, almost like balloons. Any help or advice would be greatly apprecaited, as I’m sort of freaking out a little.
I’m 15 weeks, and I have yet to get a new gestational diabetes test. I’ll ask about it at my next visit and hopefully get some answers. There’s really no tenderness at all, or warmth… it’s just sort of raw and hurting, where there’s basically no toenail except for the very, very bottom of the nail.

Many questions about gestational diabetes.?

Can a woman get gestational diabetes early on in pregnancy? I am 17 weeks pregnant and already diagnosed with gestational diabetes. I found out really early at like 7 or 8 weeks. my numbers aren’t really high just slightly above the normal but they think I may have had diabetes before hand which I think is odd because I never had a problem before with blood sugar levels. I had a 3 hour glucose tolerance test done when I was about 11 weeks along and only one number was out of wack which was an hour after they made me take the glucola drink. This is such a hard thing for me to deal with, I work as a waitress full time and don’t always get a chance to eat my meals and snacks when needed. I have a docs note about needing a break during my shift but yesterday my jerk of a boss said no even though I had a note and my doc said i have to eat around the same time each day. any advice about all of this would be wonderful my main concern is can a woman get gestational diabetes early on? Thanks!
I’m loving the helpful answers so far. I am doing my best to watch my carbs but being a carb lover it’s so difficult but I’m managing. I’m still eating my favorite foods but watching how much of it I put into my mouth. It sucks that what I can eat lots of I don’t really eat alot of…I don’t eat red meats only chicken and eggs make me sick, the only veggies I love are corn, carrots and potatoes. I think I’d win the award for pickiest eater alive. Been this way since I was a toddler. I don’t know if it’s a texture problem or my tastebuds are odd but it took me forever to chew a piece of pork or beef when my mom cooked it for me as a kid. any diet tips also?
Thanks shootingstar, hearing that I’m not the only one diagnosed early is such a wonderful relief! I told my general manager about the whole ordeal and he looked pretty upset and told me that I have a doc. note and there was no reason to tell me no and I believe one of my fellow servers yelled at my non caring boss. Thank god he’s on vacation for the next week!

Questions regarding diabetes/allergic reaction (may be a little long)?

My dad is a diabetic. He just recently, and very suddenly, three days ago–started swelling up to the point where his throat came very close to closing up on him. His tounge, lips and basically his entire face became very swollen. He obviously went to the hospital, good thing, because if he waited any longer, his throat would have swollen up completely. They said if it had gotten any worse, they would have cut in him to put a breathing tube. (Excuse my lack of medical knowledge.)

Now, when he first got to the hospital, he was in so much pain, he forgot to tell them that he was a diabetic. So they started him on a regular IV, one that… I assume, has something in it that diabetics aren’t supposed to have. (Again, excuse me, I’m not very knowledgable when it comes to medical things.) So that may play a part in what’s going on, I’m not sure.

Anyway, he’s still feeling bad. He broke out VERY bad today, in what I’m assuming is Hives. The hospital couldn’t really tell him what triggered his swelling, that seemingly popped up overnight.

Any advice or any idea’s on where I can start on my research on what it could possibly be? My dad seems to think its a peanut allergy, and the doc at the hospital also said something about it possibly being his blood pressure medicine. I’m very worried and would apprecaite any advice or any idea on where I could start looking things up to try to figure it out. He’s probably going to go to the hospital again, or at least an allergy specialist soon.

Can major allergic reactions to things pop up over night? My father has never had trouble eating peanuts before. My dad also mentioned something about fish, the doctor said it also might be a toxin overload in the fish or something.
Also, his blood sugar levels have been really funky today. He said earlier today it was around 400, and a few hours later after he went outside and walked around a little, it went to around 200 and something. He ate an orange and an apple within about 30 minutes of eachother, and seems to think that was the cause in the spike of his sugar levels.

My mom has diabetes, and I have some questions?

So my mom has diabetes, and she has had it for a while. Almost a year… and with the bad economy, we JUST got health insurance like a week ago, so she’s off drinking and smoking and everything, plus she has a strict diet and everything. Since I want to help her I’m going on the diabetes diet too. (which sucks, because she’s pretty much only allowed to drink water, and I hate water, and I also hate veggies, lol) I’ve already started to lose weight (mind you I weigh 108 lbs, and I’m a 5’5″ female) and I’ve lost 4 lbs. I dont like that, becuase I have to keep up my weight. I CANT stop the diet, so I dont want that bull. Another question, how likely am I to getting diabetes? I dont know what kind it is, but it’s a kind you can get genetically. Thanks.

Gestational diabetes – a few questions here?

I was diagnosed yesterday with borderline gestational diabetes. Also, I have very low iron so am on iron therapy.
I am 31 weeks pregnant.
I am now going to be VERY careful with what I eat (sugar wise) but I was wondering what else I could do to make my levels more acceptable? I walk as much as I can but that is the only form of exercise I get (It is winter here in New Zealand)
There is no history of any type of diabetes in our family.
Is gest. diabetes common?
My midwife suggested I consume less chocolate (SOOO GUILTY!!! – I have been having chocolate cravings for a few months now.)
I am aware of the risks accociated with this disease e.g large baby, risk of c-section etc.
My midwife also said baby is not in the optimal birthing position and she gave me a list of “gravity induced” excersises to do. Do I need to worry 9 weeks (hopefully) out from birth about his position? He is already engaging.
My midwife explained the possibility of longer birth and back labour.
First baby

Hypoglycemia? Diabetes? I have questions…?

Lately I’ve been feeling some things that are not typical. It started with strange things happening to my vision – floaters, if you will. And then I was having trouble focusing on some sale ads in the newspaper. It could be that I’m just getting older……..or something else.

When I sleep, or try to sleep, I’m awakened by a tingly feeling in my feet – like poor circulation…….which bothers me.

When I have something that is very sweet and sugar-filled, moments afterward, I feel dizzy and my tongue gets a bit numb.

About a month ago, I had my wife test my fasting blood sugar and it was 79. I guess that’s not bad……..But diabetes does run rampant in my family. Both Grandmothers died from complications of diabetes…….I had a great grandmother die from a stroke brought on by diabetes……etc, and so on. My parents have type two diabetes…….the list goes on and on.

So, I guess my wonder is “Could I have it?” The odd thing is, I’m in pretty good shape and workout/exercise regularly……so, I’m a bit confused.

Many of you will say “Go see a doctor”…but I do not have medical insurance right now, so that luxury is not there – if need be, I’ll go to a ‘free clinic’ in my area……..but I thought I’d pose some of these things to you to see what you think I could be experiencing…..

Thanks again!

Writing a paper and have questions about diabetes and insulin.?

This might sound kind of bad, so I’m going to start this with I am not trying to kill myself…. Its a paper for abnormal psychology and I have to write about someone with diabetes (Type 1) and major depression… , so first how many units is a normal dose of fast acting insulin?, how many units of fast acting insulin would cause an average sized person to go into insulin shock? and about how long would it take for them to go unconscious. I’ve tried to find info about insulin but it is pretty confusing. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
ok, i’ll try to clarify.. About how many units would a normal sized person take for eating an averaged size meal when their blood sugar about normal? vs. How much would cause them to go unconscious? and about how long it would take before they went into a coma?
